Elements of a good partnership? :together:
So, I've been having this pensive feeling, usually reserved for closing time at the bar after post comp drinks. ;) I searched for good/perfect partnership qualities in the forums and found threads on what makes a good leader/follower, and it got me thinking about what makes a successful, happy couple (dancing, although I'm sure a lot of the characteristics would apply off the floor too ).
This is my last year with my university team and, after a good two/three years of watching the couples on my team, have evaded the drama (thankfully) and noticed interesting pairings that worked out well, whilst others go like this:
I'm sure we've all seen our share of this in whatever environment we've danced in! I guess at different stages in our dancing, we're looking for different things out of a partnership. So I thought I'd see what everyone's opinion was on what makes their partnership work. :)
Mine right now is roughly:
30% hard work (practice makes perfect, or close enough)
30% equal commitment (useful for making it to practice/comps)
30% understanding/respect (useful when one of you can't make it to practice/comps ;) )
5% similar approach to dance (in ideas and technique)
5% chemistry/creativity
So DFers, what works for you? Thought I'd get everyone in a reflective midweek mood :)

Nature Has A Good Beat, But Can You Dance To It?
Thought this might interest some of you, as it did me.

Just one more thing for us dancers to try to "wrap our heads around."

my tango lexicon
Can someone tell me the english and spanish term for the mirror position in the crossed system? The couple is half-way shadowed.
I use to call it in german "falscher Spiegel", it means false mirror, falso espejo. But this term is my own invention. How would you call it?

Gasoline Prices - finding the lowest
Well, isn't it grand that they are predicting $5 bucks a gallon by Memorial Day. Love where I work - getting inside scoop - this is not new -news.
So...DF-ers who are looking for clues, hints, tricks...here's a few I found.
www dot gasbuddies dot com or it's gasbuddy dot com.
Open the web page - type in your zip code (where your likely to purchase gasoline for vehicle) and it will list the cheapest per gallon amount per grade and what gas station and location exactly. By the minute.
Also, other tips.
1) Buy mid-week, prices tend to change upwards towards the weekends.
2) Do not buy gasoline at a station located near Fwy/TollWay/Major traffic artery (you are a "locked" target for high prices and captured audience).
3) Check out your "rewards" programs with your local grocery store for gasoline discounts. Shell is the most aggressive in partnering with markets for discount gas prices.
4) Try to "not buy" at the major gasoline carriers in the game.
YIKES!

Building the perfect man (or woman) cave
This thread is mostly tongue in cheek. DS and I just moved to a new place, and he (a fourteen year old) has decided to make his bedroom into the perfect man cave.
Here's his shopping list:
Big screen TV, with Blue Ray, Hulu, Netflix, etc, and extended cable with premium channels
All game systems -- Wii, PS3, XBOX360
Surround sound
Computer desk with an awesome computer and all the peripherals
Posters, paint, etc, to taste (right now, he's into a combo outer space and deep sea theme Blech!)
Mini fridge stocked with fave snacks and bottled drinks
Book shelves
Couch and gaming chairs
This kid knows what he likes. His plan is to never leave the room, which, quite frankly, works for me right now. Teens are a pain!
Just curious. If you could design your perfect space for hanging out and just being you, what would you include?

Help for loose knee joints?
I'm wondering if anyone has experienced this, and has found workaround solutions.... Two weeks ago, I was stretching my legs the wrong way (stretching w/a slight twist), and pulled my kneecaps slightly out of place - a a subluxation/temporary dislocation. Went to a sports med MD, who said to stop dancing for about a week, then start back very gradually. I asked for strengthening exercises, and he said none were needed - said my legs are strong enough.
My knees are still wonky.... they'll be fine, then go slightly out of joint... I've been alternating between wearing elastic knee braces (when the knees get more wobbly) and not (when they start to get better). Going up/down stairs mostly one step at a time, being careful, etc.
In general, I have slight hypermobility - not bad enough for a true medical condition - my shoulders and hips used to come out of their sockets easily, til I learned over the years how to keep range of motion within normal limits, push into the joint before moving, etc.
The knees are a different kind of joint, though.... I'm not sure how to or if you can push one part in before moving, to keep it in place....
I miss dancing!!!!
I would love to try strengthening exercises, but am afraid of hurting something.... any suggestions?

When the end is in sight..
Hi around,
have you ever got the feeling that your dancing time may be over soon, cause your knees, feet or what ever wont play along any more?
And what would you do if it actually comes true?
-Stay within the community but sitting at the bar?
-Find a new job within the community as DJing, lecturing, making music?
-contributing as a virtual dancer in dance forums, blogs and other internet stuff?
-Break up completely as not to be reminded any more?

New To Ballroom
Does anyone have any recommendations as to some self-study materials for use in the off-time in between private lessons for someone who is new to ballroom dance?
Also, I am extremely interested in competing. The only thing is....how on earth do people afford them? Sponsors? Any creative suggestions?

Yeah, but is it Country?
So, last week at my favorite Country Western Dance Hall there was this guy who'd been around for a while. Comes from Eastern Oregon and spent time in Eastern Texas. We're talkin' back in the 70s before "Urban Cowboy". He taught CW here in Portland for a while, but the form of two step that he knew from Texas, did not catch on. The many of us learned as "Texas Two Step" did. And it's not the same. There were in fact lots of two steps back then.
He has a particular problem with West Coast Swing not being country. He didn't believe me when I told him it was first called Western Swing and started in LA back when there were lots of "country people" as new residents in "LA" and there wre places like Bell Gardens where people had chicken coops and goats, etc, right next to nice suburbs like Downey.
He really enjoyed telling me about bouncers who asked West Coast Swing dancers to leave the floor in Texas dance spots.
Later that evening he told me that I was a pretty good dancer, but that I wasn't country.
Anyhow...
I see a lot of stuff on the dance floor here in Portland that "isn't country" by my standards.
But, what do YOU see out there in country western places, or places where people are supposed to be doing country western dancing that "isn't country" to you?

Advice needed--hospital stay care package
Hi, all. It's me again looking for advice and ideas.
A friend of mine just went into the hospital today for a quasi-emergency C-section. The pregnancy was high-risk, and this is about 3 weeks or so earlier than what they'd have liked. Anyhow, long story short, Mom is going to be in the hospital for a little while and after that I'm sure they'll be in and out for a while to visit Baby in the NICU. I'm currently waiting for the OK to go and visit them in the hospital.
I'd like to bring them a care package when I do get to visit them. I was thinking of a basket of some nice food for them to have on hand to nibble since: a)they're both foodies, so I doubt eating hospital food would be all that appealing (although I suppose that they're so preoccupied I'd wonder if they'd even notice), b)they will have family and friends visiting and staying with them, so it might be nice to have some food to have/offer, c)I doubt they'll want to think about mundane things like food once she's discharged and schlepping back and forth to the hospital.
With me so far? Thoughts thus far? Advice?
I was thinking of a basket with the obligatory bubbly, some chocolate (friend loves good chocolate), maybe some cheese and crackers (with fridge packs or something), a summer sausage or something, jam/chutney/spread, fresh fruit, and maybe something else that doesn't need to be refrigerated (much). I don't know what.
I'm thinking that later, when friend is discharged, that I can bring actual food-food. Soups, casseroles, etc...in foil containers and with disposable plates and cutlery and whatnot so there's no hassle to clean or return things.
Any ideas? Suggestions? Words of caution or advice?
Update: friend's baby was born shortly after 2pm, weighing 2lbs 1oz. Apparently breathing on her own, pink, and moving lots. Was described as "mad at the world." LOL. :-D

Dance Themed Tattoo Idea
So for my 10th wedding anniversary (which was yesterday) my wife and I went to a local tattoo parlor with some ideas for the artist and after discussion she left to do some drawings and we're supposed to hear back sometime this weekend with a sample drawing.
My question is does the following sound cheesy:
Sailor Jerry style pinup in kind of a leveraged away position (kind of the basic for west coast) with a soldier in dress uniform from WWII era, with kind of a cityscape in the background. My concern is that this could look really cheesey if not done VERY well. The artist has done some pretty good sailor jerry pinups in the past, which is why i chose her.
Thoughts?
I'll post up the tattoo artists drawing when i get it.
